When the Izukyū line was opened in 1961, the industrial structure of Shimoda city changed. The city’s population by industry from 1960 to 1980 is shown in Table 5–2. In 1965, four years after the opening of the railroad, the proportion of the population in agriculture, forestry and fisheries declined from 35.5% to 23.9%, while the proportion in services increased from 17.5% to 25.6%, and in wholesale and retail from 16.8% to 20.3%. These trends have continued. In 1980, the population engaged in agriculture was 6.2%, and in fisheries 3.0%, while those engaged in services had risen to 33.1% and in wholesale and retail the figure was 26%.
